Plumbago

Plumbago auriculata

Cape Plumbago, Celestina

About This Plant

Sun/partial shade; semi-evergreen in warm winters, but it drops leaves in extreme freezes. Plumbago is most admired for the blue (or white) flower clusters that persist from summer through fall. Its informal, mounding growth habit is useful for filling in landscape beds, especially in the shade. Without freezes it would eventually grow to shrub size, but winter weather typically prunes it to the ground.

Origins: South Africa

Maintenance

Generally none needed. Cut back freely or hedge if needed; it often freezes back to the ground in winter. Water occasionally if needed during summer.

An easy, heat-loving shrub with billowing blue flowers.
