Japanese Quince

Chaenomeles japonica

Japanese Quince

About This Plant

Sun or partial shade. A hardy thorny shrub, quince lights up early spring days with rosy and red-orange blossoms. Easy to grow, it requires little effort for a terrific spring show, as long as there’s sufficient light. It also makes an effective, spiny security hedge. The crabapple fruit is bitter but edible. Collected in autumn and mix with other fruits for jam. It contains more Vitamin C than many citrus.

Origins: Japan, China

Maintenance

Quince is a low-maintenance plant that doesn’t need much shaping. It blooms on old wood, so wait until just after blooming to prune. You’ll need gloves.

A prolific early bloomer, adding color to the spring landscape while other plants are still waking up.
