About This Plant

Shade/part shade; deciduous, dropping leaves in winter. A perennial native Texas shrub with brilliant purple berry clusters in fall. It grows in the shaded forest understory around cedar elm, yaupon holly and Turk’s cap.

Origins: Southeastern U.S. to TX, generally east of Bexar County.

Maintenance

Prune to shape as needed. The leaves may flag/wilt in afternoon sunlight when planted in hot, exposed locations.

A star in the fall, with clusters of brilliant purple berries.
