Butterfly Vine

Mascagnia macroptera

About This Plant

Sun. Nearly evergreen, with glossy leaves that relish western summer sun. The flowers appear throughout the warm season from spring to fall, but it’s the winged seed pods that earn this hardy vine its common name, and provide endless fodder for summer crafts. On its own, butterfly vine forms a huge shrublike mound or even a groundcover, but it can easily climb a trellis or other support if given the opportunity.

Origins: Mexico and tropical Americas

Maintenance

Cut back in early spring to control its sprawling size. It may freeze to the ground in cold winters.
