Devil’s Trumpet

Datura wrightii

Angel's Trumpet, Moonflower, Sacred Datura, Jimsonweed

About This Plant

Partial shade or sun. Datura is a perennial nightshade with large tomato-like leaves and pale trumpet flowers that bloom at night; by day these are often already torn and faded. The fruit is a distinctive thorn-apple filled with seeds. Datura can reseed freely and makes an interesting subject for any native wildscape or night garden — albeit a coarse and very poisonous one.

Origins: Southwest US and Northern Mexico

Maintenance

Datura appreciates either supplemental water or protection from the afternoon sun, especially in summer. It normally fades away early in autumn.
