Sun or partial shade; fuller form in sun. Coyotillo is thornless and evergreen, with soft, lime-green, strongly veined leaves and a nice rounded shrub form.
Coyotillo is rarely used in domestic settings north of Mexico, since the attractive black berries are poisonous. However, it is used medicinally in Mexico, and it’s useful in native South Texas wildscape, providing cover and plenty of fruit for mockingbirds. Mature specimens can be seen at the San Antonio Botanical Garden.
