Texas Bluebonnet

About This Plant

Full sun; a cool-season annual climaxing with spikes of blue flowers along Texas roadsides in mid to late spring. Also available in maroon, white, rosy-pink and light blue forms. Plant by seed on bare ground in mid-autumn; it can grow as a low groundcover over Bermuda grass during winter. An A&M Texas Superstar and, obviously, a native. There are three primary species in Texas: Lupinus texensis (Texas Bluebonnet), Lupinus havardii (Big Bend Bluebonnet) and, south of San Antonio, Lupinus subcarnosus (Sandyland Bluebonnet).

Spreading seed in fall, cutting back in the late spring.

The Texas state flower. Plant seeds in mid-autumn for spring blooms.
