About This Plant
Sun or shade; it needs less water in filtered shade. A low-sprawling evergreen perennial with scarlet-red blooms and softly (and sometimes sharply) fuzzy apple-green leaves. Betony is deer resistant and drought-tolerant; tender new foliage may be burned or discolored, however, in extreme cold (below 20 degrees).
It can be well-behaved in the garden, and attracts hummingbirds. The name and nativity have been disputed over time; although planted in “Texas native” gardens, it is unclear whether any wild native populations ever existed in West Texas.
Maintenance
None required; may appreciate some light supplemental water in summer weather.
