New Home, New Landscape

Time to challenge your creativity and makes this place your home.

You’re the proud owner of a new home. After you get all the boxes unpacked, you’re probably thinking about what you want to do in the landscape.

Think of this as a challenge in creativity to make your landscape your very own. And there’s no right or wrong answer. Do you have pets or children who will need grass to play on? How do you envision your outdoor living space? What areas, if any, do you want hardscaped? Patios, outdoor kitchens and other outdoor living areas need to be considered.

Maybe the home builder started the landscape for you, but it’s not really your style and you want to add or delete some of the elements they included. Develop a plan and put it on paper, but don’t be overzealous. Tackle it in in stages so you don’t get overwhelmed. Your budget must also be considered in the project. I moved into my home over a year ago and I’m still adding to the landscape. It is a work in progress!

Remember to work with what you have, if you have shade, landscape for shade. If you have a rocky yard, use plants that work with thin soils. Don’t do something just because everyone else is doing it. Be an original. The main thing is to have a plan and stick with it. Designing your yard and garden can be rewarding and can let your personal style shine.
