Rio Grande Copperlily

Habranthus tubispathus

Copperlily

About This Plant

Perennial, less than 1 foot. Does well in rocky soil in full sun. Common in parks, medians and even a few yards in northern Bexar County. Foliage and flowers are ephemeral appearing for a brief period after summer and fall rains. Not common in the nursery trade; conserve if possible to add a pop of color to lawns and flowerbeds.

Origins: Debate exists as to the origins of this plant; it occurs from South America north to Texas, where some contend it is introduced.

Maintenance

Withstands mowing and can co-exist with many lawn and roadside grasses. Allow seeds to mature before mowing to allow reseeding.
