Octopus Agave

Agave bracteosa

Agave; Octopus Agave; Spider Agave; Squid Agave; Candelabra Agave

About This Plant

Partial shade. Evergreen, with soft, gently arching leaves. The rough ridges along the margin should be handled with care but, overall, soft leaves and soft terminal spines make this one of the gentlest, least dangerous agaves. In a garden setting it can be used along pathways since it presents little hazard to pedestrians. It may spread by rhizomes and offsets. Unlike many of its relatives, this agave doesn’t die after blooming. Find it in specialty nurseries; variegated forms are available.

Origins: Northern Mexico; Sierra Madre Oriental
