Let’s be honest — watering rules probably aren’t anyone’s favorite topic. But following watering rules is one of the simplest ways we can help protect our community’s water supply.
The good news is that watering efficiently doesn’t mean giving up a beautiful yard. In fact, deep, infrequent watering at the right time of day often results in stronger root systems, healthier plants and less water wasted.
Why do watering rules matter?
During hot, dry Texas summers, the single largest use of water by a typical household is outdoor lawn and landscape irrigation. All that demand can put a lot of stress on our water system.
Established by city ordinance, watering rules and drought restrictions are calibrated according to the current level of the Edwards Aquifer. Watering rules help spread out irrigation over the course of a week, reducing that stress and ideally reducing water waste. This ensures we have a reliable water supply for our community now and in the future.
Less is more
A common misconception is that plants need water every day. But most established plants (including turfgrass) do better with deep, infrequent watering. This encourages roots to spread out and grow deeper, making plants more tolerant of extended droughts.
Before using the sprinkler, ask yourself if it has rained recently and if your plants are showing signs they need water.
Make every drop count
These simple practices can make a big difference.

- Water during the cooler parts of the day to avoid evaporation. Watering windows help with that, as San Antonio residents should never use irrigation between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. in any drought stage.
