Turn a new leaf

Cooler temperatures and decreased daylight make this the perfect time of year for landscaping.

With Sunday’s fall equinox, the time of year every gardener has been looking forward to since the beginning of summer has officially arrived.

Shorter days and relatively cooler temperatures normally make autumn the perfect time of year for gardening. And the nurseries are welcoming us back with fall inventory for our renovated landscapes!

There are so many reasons to get out and garden. Take your pick:

  • Plant new trees and shrubs. The root systems will have ample time to recover from transplanting and grow new roots before next summer.
  • The chance of increased rainfall this time of year reduces watering needs for new plantings.
  • Plants that barely survived summer heat often celebrate the season with a new rush of fall color.
  • Pesky pests — especially mosquitoes — retreat due to cooler temperatures.

So, get out and enjoy the wonderful fall weather. Your landscape will love you for it!
