Your landscape is the single biggest water user. So turning off your automatic irrigation system is the easiest way to use less water.
Here’s why. Most of the plant species we recommend are xeric, or drought tolerant — they prefer very small amounts of supplemental water, especially during the dormant season. Also, from evergreen trees and shrubs to lawns and perennials, all of our plants shut down completely or significantly reduce physiological processes such as photosynthesis, reproduction, cellular activity, etc.
These two factors are reason enough to limit supplementary water to the absolute minimum. If by chance there is an absence of significant rainfall during a month or two, we recommend using the holiday method.
