Get a Free Fruit Tree Saturday, Jan. 29!

The annual Jammin’ Jams fruit and nut tree adoption event is back. Line up early to get your pick!

Whether you’re new to San Antonio or have just never heard of this fruitful opportunity, you’ll enjoy the Parks and Recreation Department’s Jammin’ Jams Fruit & Nut Tree Adoption.

For the second year in a row, the event will be a drive-thru affair from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 29 at Nelson Wolff Stadium.

Vehicles can begin lining up at 7 a.m. — just follow the signs and cones. Each vehicle is eligible for one 5-gallon fruit tree. Proof of San Antonio residency is not required.

While you wait in your car, you can tune in to a broadcast courtesy of yours truly and Rob DeRocher, Bexar County Master Gardener extraordinaire. That’s right — the City of San Antonio will have a special radio frequency for you to tune in to and a number to text us your tree questions.

Can’t make it this Saturday? There will be three additional events this year on Feb. 12, March 5 and March 26 (locations to be determined).

Species being given out include:

Mark A. Peterson was a conservation project coordinator for San Antonio Water System before retiring. With over 30 years of experience as an urban forester and arborist, Mark is probably the only person you know who actually prunes trees for fun. When not expounding on the benefits of trees and limited lawns, you're likely to find him hiking San Antonio's wilderness parks or expounding on the virtues of geography and history to his friends.
