Act Fast to Prevent Fungus

When a fungal outbreak is detected in your lawn, you need to act fast. Use the wisdom at your local nursery to identify the fungus and recommend a solution, such as broad spectrum fungicide or cornmeal.

A proactive approach is the best method of reducing turf fungi. Start by selecting grass species and varieties best suited to the existing conditions of your yard. Bermuda requires sun, St. Augustine does best in shade, and Zoysia falls somewhere in between. A grass that isn’t right for your site will favor the development of fungus.

Other important practices to follow:

  • Consider the season before fertilizing and follow fertilizer directions to the letter. The correct amount will promote a healthy turf capable of resisting a fungus attack.
  • Avoid overwatering – fungi like moist conditions. This is especially important in clay soils, which have poor drainage.
  • Mow at the recommended height to encourage good air circulation and reduce moisture.

Taking these preventive measures will help reduce the number of fungal outbreaks in your lawn.
