Botanical Garden Not Just for Gardeners

Lacking a green thumb? No problem. You don’t need one to enjoy what the San Antonio Botanical Garden has to offer. From children’s gardening programs and nature workshops to bird watching and low-water-use landscaping, there’s something for everyone at the Garden.

When you go, stroll down WaterSaver Lane. Sponsored by SAWS, this exhibit showcases the beauty and versatility of five different low-water-use landscapes for San Antonio. Each is centered on a theme that complements the planting. Whether your taste runs to Cottage Garden, Spanish Courtyard, Wildscape, Manicured Xeriscape, or Hill Country, there is a landscape for you to enjoy. You can also compare your favorite themed low-water-use example to a regular St. Augustine-dominated landscape.

Garden and nature workshops are held throughout the year and explore topics such as horticulture, botany and natural history. Beginning bird walk events – held the third Saturday of each month at 9 a.m. – showcase our feathered friends in their native habitats. Spot hummingbirds, long-billed thrashers, black-bellied whistling ducks, green heron, and common moorhens.

Little Sprout Mondays is for the 3- and 4-year-old kiddos. Held every second Monday, the program features storytelling, crafts and hands-on exploration. The Children’s Vegetable Garden program provides 8- to 13-year-olds with an opportunity to grow their own vegetables and ornamental plants with the help of instructors from the Bexar County Master Gardeners and other volunteer organizations.

For more information on any of these programs and other educational and volunteer opportunities, visit the Botanical Garden’s website or call 210-207-3250.
