Sun or shade. Texas winter grass is a clump-forming perennial that forms gentle mounds in the company of deciduous trees. It grows during the cooler months while the leaves are off the trees, lending green ground cover to the winter yard. The fruit has a sharp tip and twisted awn that are likely well known to children on any playground.
Mow it at the highest mower setting during the winter to encourage denser growth and prevent the formation of too many “spears.” When the leaves return in the spring, growth will slow; under the shade of large trees it remains green throughout the year.
Can be mowed at the highest mower setting. If you prefer to retain the moundlike texture of the basal growth as a groundcover and just clean up the flower stalks, the seed stalks can be brush sculpted with hedge clippers or a string trimmer.
