A small bunchgrass common on limestone outcrops like those in northern Bexar County. Where occasional rains drain downhill across bare rock, seep muhly can be found thriving — in some of the toughest local growing conditions. The older leaves form dense fibrous masses; these have been compared to ball moss.
Its purple flower stalks reveal its kinship with other ornamental muhly grasses. Seep muhly is commercially available as seed, and often used in prairie restoration; “Autumn Embers” shows stronger coloration.
