Full sun. A warm-season bunchgrass, evergreen in warm winters. Although it has not yet been observed spreading into natural areas in central Texas, this fire-adapted ornamental introduced species has proven invasive and problematic in warm climates including Florida, Arizona, California and, famously, Hawaii.
‘Rubrum’ is considered less likely to set seed, but why take a chance when there are plenty of attractive, non-problematic Texas native grasses to use instead?
This non-native will die down with any frost and sometimes without sufficient water; plan on cutting it back in winter.
Considered a potential invasive and high-risk ornamental in south-central Texas.
