Oxblood Lily

Rhodophiala bifida

Hurricane Lily, Schoolhouse Lily

About This Plant

Sun to partial shade; no above-ground foliage in summer except for the bright red flowers in September (especially after late-summer rains). Schoolhouse lily is a favorite bulb for old-fashioned gardens; find it through specialty bulb stores. Keep it in flowerbeds to avoid mowing the emerging foliage and flower stalks. It performs well in clay-type soils and can offset freely.

Origins: Argentina

Maintenance

Carefree. Flowers appear in early autumn as long as they aren’t mowed.
