Carolina Snailseed

Cocculus carolinus

Red-berry Moonseed, Coral-bead, Hierba del Ojo

About This Plant

Sun/part shade. Snailseed is a deciduous vine with a tenacious habit. Ornamental qualities include abundant red berries in autumn; the coiled seeds resemble snails. Snailseed is probably already present in any shaded area. It can be a difficult weed to control in the garden, entangling small plants. But consider leaving a patch on the chainlink if you need a tough native vine: the fruit is an excellent resource for alley wildlife, mockingbirds and cardinals.

Origins: Southeastern and midwestern U.S.

Maintenance

None needed in the native edge, but preventing its spread in ornamental gardens requires some diligent weeding.

A tough native vine with heart-shaped leaves and bright red autumn berries.
