About This Plant
Sun or shade. Plateau Goldeneye is one of the few species in the sunflower family that will bloom in bright shade as well as sun, making it a versatile plant in any large garden. It’s a showy fall bloomer with golden, daisy-shaped flowers relished by a multitude of pollinators; see it along roadsides in Central Texas every October.
Goldeneye’s form depends on sun exposure. In full sun it can grow into a large, stout bush; in shade it has a lankier habit.
Plateau Goldeneye is more common in the wild than in nurseries, but it can be obtained from specialty native plant vendors in central Texas.
Maintenance
None required; needs very little water and tolerates all soil types. If it is left uncut, it provides forage for seed-eating birds throughout the winter. It reseeds easily and can form a nice colony if desired. Otherwise, cut it to the ground in winter.
