About This Plant
Full sun to part shade. A very large deciduous shrub or, if unpruned, an ornamental tree with waxy leaves, claw-like thorns and red tubular blooms throughout the warm season. Drought- and heat tolerant, it attracts hummingbirds and other birds.
Maintenance
Pruning and training is complicated by thorny branches. Expect it to sustain severe damage in hard freezes; it can be cut back to the ground or restarted as needed.
