About This Plant

Sun to part shade; a semi-evergreen vine that produces dark, strong-smelling blooms late spring through fall. A popular landscape subject, evergreen wisteria grows prolifically if given a trellis or arbor to climb; in a couple of seasons it can typically provide good shade for a patio.

The name is a misnomer. It’s not a wisteria (though related) and it’s not at all evergreen in central Texas; by all accounts, it drops leaves in winter. However, unlike its cousin Chinese wisteria, the bloom lasts all season long, and it’s not a noxious invasive pest.

Maintenance

Heavy litter typically requires cleanup after each bloom cycle; it can reportedly stain carpets if tracked into the house.
