About This Plant
At least 50% sun. Dyckia is an evergreen, tender tropical succulent with stiff, colorful leaves in a variety of silver, green and burgundy shades. Often grown as a potted plant, they’re hardy in the ground and can form spreading mats in ideal conditions. For the landscaper, Dyckia make useful small bedding plants around larger succulents, especially when river rock has been used as a soil dressing.
Dyckia is undemanding, which is lucky because most are sharply armed. Plants tolerate well-drained, dry and even quite cold conditions.
Nearly 200 species and many cultivars are available.
Maintenance
Be able to provide moisture during the active growing season as they dry out faster than other succulents. Plant in the ground for best performance. Dyckia can withstand temperatures into the low twenties and even the teens Farenheit; some cover may be needed with wintry precipitation.
