About This Plant
Sun/part shade; deciduous, with narrow loosestrife leaves and brilliant orange, pink or red flowers resembling embers. Various species and hybrids are available, from the shrublike ‘David Verity’ to the dense candy-corn Cuphea micropetala. Most freeze to the ground in cold winters, but some are root-hardy and return as perennials. The tubeflowers attract hummingbirds when in bloom.
Maintenance
Expect it to freeze back in winter; it can be cut back as needed. Tropical plants may require supplemental water in summer.
