About This Plant
Partial shade; evergreen. Best in a woodland setting, especially under deciduous trees where it can get a bit of sun in winter. Sword-like leaves resemble iris or cast-iron plant. Purple flowers appear in mid-spring, and may last up to ten weeks.
Chinese ground orchid is an old-fashioned garden favorite; once established, it’s carefree, freeze-tolerant and drought-hardy.
Maintenance
Ground orchid prefers well-drained moist soil; if you’re in heavy clay, be sure to mix in compost to allow the roots some oxygen when wet. As long as it’s kept mulched in shade, it’s quite drought hardy; it just grows more slowly.
