About This Plant
Shade (or moist, well-drained sun). Deciduous, with large, rough, serrated leaves, long arching branches, pink flowers in summer, and clusters of dark glossy berries in autumn. Occasionally the berries are white. A somewhat larger cousin of American beautyberry, this Central American native can be used as understory under cedar elms, live oaks, and other large shade trees.
Like beautyberry, Callicarpa acuminata may pout during dry summer weather, but generally it’s quite tough.
Maintenance
Hedging as needed. Appreciates supplemental summer water in exposed locations.
