Don’t Trash that Tree, Recycle It

Dana Nichols

Christmas has come and gone and now it’s time to take down the tinsel and lights. If you put up a fresh Christmas tree this year, you may be wondering how best to dispose of it.

Here are some ideas that will let you and your tree give back to the environment.

  1. Cut it down into small pieces and recycle it in your own compost and brush pile.
  2. Cut it into large pieces and pile it in a corner of your yard to serve as a nice winter hiding place for small birds and other wildlife.
  3. Use it as a bird feeder by propping it up outside and adorning it with citrus peels, old popcorn strings, or pine cones smeared with peanut butter and seeds to feed the birds. Hang cotton based colored yarn or raffia on limbs so early nesters can use them to build nests.

I usually cut mine up and put it in the back brush pile, but I think this year I’ll use it as a winter birdfeeder for a while. I’ll let you know how that goes!
