Watering Rules Come Back To Haunt Us

Fear not, your plants will not perish. Even your evergreens will continue to gleam.

Rainfall has been scarce and that’s opened the door to the return of Stage 1 watering rules. But fear not, your plants will not perish. Even your evergreens will continue to gleam.

That’s because your landscape is preparing for its long winter slumber so it doesn’t need as much water as it did in summer. In fact, watering too much just might wake the living dead, creating a lawn filled with feasting fungi! Watering your landscape once a week is more than enough.

Consider following the holiday watering method. Pick one holiday per month for the next five months, and water everything well on that holiday.

Even though we have returned to once-a-week watering, chances are excellent your landscape will survive. Pay close attention to the current watering advice to learn your recommended watering amounts.

Mark A. Peterson was a conservation project coordinator for San Antonio Water System before retiring. With over 30 years of experience as an urban forester and arborist, Mark is probably the only person you know who actually prunes trees for fun. When not expounding on the benefits of trees and limited lawns, you're likely to find him hiking San Antonio's wilderness parks or expounding on the virtues of geography and history to his friends.
