Mineral buildup’s nemesis, plain ol’ distilled vinegar is a workhorse when it comes to household hard water hindrances.
Most of us are familiar with the characteristic pungent scent of vinegar. But did you know it’s useful around your home beyond the typical cleaning and disinfecting chores?
Vinegar is a great descaling agent. For those who think a water softener is the only way to have clean fixtures in their home, here are some tips and tricks to save you from the costly installation and upkeep of an always-thirsty water softener.
And all you need is standard distilled vinegar (5% acidity) and a few other household items.

Problem: The showerhead or faucet is spraying in all directions or visibly clogged.
Solution: Add some vinegar to a plastic bag, just enough to cover the base of the showerhead or faucet. Secure the bag over the fixture with ribbon, twine or rubber band and leave for a few hours or overnight. Rinse well after removing the vinegar.

Problem: Coffee machine or hot water kettle has white buildup, impacting your favorite morning beverage.
Solution: Add water and a small amount of vinegar, then boil to descale. If there’s a lot of buildup, you can use straight vinegar and let it sit for a few hours. Wash well before using.

Problem: Toilet flushing funny or slowly.
Solution: Once you notice a problem, add a few cups of vinegar to the toilet tank and let sit overnight before flushing. You can also do this monthly or quarterly to keep mineral buildup at bay. In this case, you may only need a cup or two of vinegar. (Bonus tip: Our resident plumber recommends pouring vinegar into the overflow tube in the tank and letting it sit overnight.)
Next time you smell vinegar and think yuck, remember how versatile a solution it can be.
