Make it a water conscious holiday season

It’s easy to overlook the impact our holiday habits have on one of our most precious resources.

As we deck the halls and prepare for festive gatherings, it’s easy to overlook the impact our holiday habits have on one of our most precious resources — water.

Whether you’re planning for a house full of loved ones for the holidays or hoping to work on your winter garden, being mindful of water use this season will not only save you money but also bestow a wonderful gift to our planet and community.

Here are some simple ways to help you celebrate sustainably this year.

  • Plan ahead. Thaw food in the refrigerator instead of under running water.
  • Pipes don’t lie. Keep your drains (and the city’s sewers) clog-free this holiday season and #CanTheGrease! Scrape all grease and food bits from plates, pots and pans right into the trash.
  • Put your dishwasher to work. It uses less water than handwashing and the gentle cycle is safer for your special dishes.
  • Stuff their stockings with efficient fixtures. A new faucet aerator or showerhead will fit nicely.
  • Give water softeners a winter checkup. Make sure the frequency of the recharge cycle is appropriate for your home. Depending on the model, it may be set to recharge after so many gallons or every few days, not every day.
  • Turn off your irrigation system. It deserves a vacation after working hard all year.

Happy holidays and may all your days — and plants — be merry and bright!
