Picture this: you’re sitting outside enjoying the beautiful landscape you’ve spent hours designing, planting and tending to. The sun is setting, perfectly highlighting your WaterSaver landscape bed.
Before you snap a quick cellphone pic — and use funky filters and such — consider these quick tips to capture the true essence of your landscape.

Photo composition. Take a note from a professional photographer’s handbook and experiment with different elements in your photo. Identify the focal point — the main area of the photo you want to draw the eye to — and position your camera so the focal point is framed by another part of your landscape. Get artsy with it! Try taking a photo underneath a tree and use the branches to frame the top and sides of your focal point.
When taking a wide-shot of your landscape, experiment with depth. Showcasing elements at different distances creates a more compelling photo.

Get those angles. Don’t be afraid to move around when taking your photo. Bend down to capture a blooming plant or extend your arms up to capture the sun peeking over your fenceline. Try standing still and seeing how many angles you can use to capture one part of your landscape. You may be surprised at how different photos of the same area look when you change the angle.

Time of day. When does your landscape usually look its best? Golden hour or sunset photos are always great, but don’t neglect the other hours of the day. There are ample opportunities for stunning photos in the early morning, when the dew is still on the grass, or in mid-afternoon when the sun casts a shadow on the tree in your backyard.

Get into the mindset. Pretend your house is for sale to help you take photos that showcase its curb appeal. You’ve put time and effort into creating an outdoor haven, might as well take some great photos you can show off when bragging about it to friends and family!
