It’s time to turn back the irrigation clock

Now that daylight saving time has ended, remember to adjust the clock on your irrigation system controller too — and fall back on watering until spring.

For many of us, fall is one of the best times of the year as it brings pleasant temperatures and a muchawaited change in the air.

As days get shorter and temperatures cooler, it’s not just your wardrobe that needs adjusting: your irrigation system does too, especially with Stage 3 watering rules still in effect.

For your landscape, cooler weather means less evaporation and the end of the growing season. Most lawns and plants typically need about half as much water in the fall. During this time, most plant life begins preparing for winter dormancy, putting energy into their roots instead of above-ground growth so they don’t need much hydration. This means the longer run times and weekly watering cycles you had in summer are no longer necessary.seasonal adjust

Don’t be afraid to use the seasonal adjust setting on your controller! This feature allows your system to decrease all the run times at once. Also, make sure your controller isn’t running any extra programs or start times. Remember, most controllers only require a single start time. Extra or “stacked” times and programs can easily quadruple your water consumption, even in winter.
