It’s 11 p.m. — are your lights out?

Embrace the darkness and turn the ‘Lights Out, Texas’ to help keep birds safe as they migrate through our area at night.

In the fall, nearly two billion birds pass through Texas — a majority of them travel at night. Sadly, many collide into buildings and windows from being disoriented by bright city lights. The death toll is up to 1 billion birds a year in the United States.

You can help make sure migrating birds have safe passage by turning off any non-essential lighting from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Nov. 30 or follow these five dark skies friendly lighting practices.

Curious about how many birds are coming through Bexar County? Check the migration dashboard on BirdCast. You might be surprised to discover just how busy the skies are at night.
