Chances are you made it through most of the summer with a bright green lawn, whether you watered it or not. But now that August heat and dry weather have settled in, even the best-cared for grass is fading fast from spring green to summer gold.

So, if you’re using your irrigation system already, now is the time to make sure it’s operating efficiently. From clogged nozzles to ghost programs, here are five common irrigation issues to look out for.
1. Ghost programs
Most irrigation controllers include multiple programs (A, B, C and D), each with a watering schedule option. Accidentally entering start times into more than one program can cause the system to run multiple times every day or week. To ensure you’re watering within Stage 2 restrictions, review each program using the program button and remove any unnecessary start times or programs.
2. Non-functioning rain sensor
Rain sensors should be replaced about every five years to ensure reliable operation. Wireless sensors require routine battery replacement, while wired sensors should be inspected for damaged wiring. When dealing with a non-functioning rain sensor, many homeowners will switch the sensor to bypass on the controller. Scheduling regular maintenance will enable you to leave the sensor active, allowing it to perform its main function.
3. Bypassed or non-functioning master valve
A properly functioning master valve prevents the irrigation main line from constantly being pressurized. Without one, a leak can have constant flow until the backflow preventer or irrigation isolation valve is shut off. If a valve gets stuck in the open position, a working master valve will stop the water flow to that specific valve when the controller is turned off, helping you minimize water loss until repairs can be made.
4. Old or non-functioning backflow preventer
Backflow preventers are required by state law on every irrigation system and must be tested annually by a licensed backflow prevention assembly tester in the City of San Antonio. A backflow preventer protects your drinking water by preventing contaminated irrigation water from flowing back into the public water supply. Aging or damaged backflow preventers should be replaced before they fail. Rusted or deteriorated shut-off valves can break during an emergency and should be replaced immediately.
5. Clogged nozzles
Mineral deposits, dirt and debris can clog sprinkler nozzles, reducing irrigation performance and coverage. Regularly inspecting nozzles and cleaning or replacing them can help maintain efficient and uniform watering.
