Learning from La Cantera
The upscale Shops at La Cantera provide useful lessons in water conservation
Retail landscaping has historically depended upon heavy watering to maintain an escapist oasis for shoppers. But in the past few years, the Shops at La Cantera has modernized this formula to create a sustainable showplace that’s green, but not dripping wet. Changes implemented since the 2011 drought are saving over 6 million gallons per year, keeping recaptured water where it’s most appreciated — in the fountains, streams and waterfalls that enliven the pedestrian arteries.
In the process, the Shops have provided local residents a vision of how lush a watersaver landscape looks when it’s attentively designed and smartly managed.
