Texas — especially the Hill Country and South Texas areas — is known for the wonderful wildflowers we see each spring. While severe drought conditions stunted the wildflower crop over the last couple of years, this year’s showing is spectacular thanks to winter and early spring rains.
Bluebonnets, Indian paintbrushes, Mexican hats and many others are plentiful this spring. But before you hop in the car in search of them, find out where fantastic displays of color have been spotted by fellow wildflower seekers. Another great online resource for wildflower information is the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. For those who didn’t know, Lady Bird was a staunch proponent of research and education programs relating to wildflowers in Texas.
Want to start your own wildflower garden? Take a drive up to Wildseed Farms just outside of Fredericksburg, where you can shop for wildflower seeds, check out a live butterfly exhibit and pick your own bouquet from the awe-inspiring wildflower fields.
Contrary to popular belief, there’s no law against picking bluebonnets. But be considerate; the flowers are there for everyone to enjoy. Bluebonnets and other wildflowers will reseed and give us a reason to explore our inner photographer again next year!
